For this assignment we will explore Roman slavery. Please read Barry Strauss on Slave Wars, and the selection of primary sources on slavery. These are attached and under the Lessons tab. There are a variety of short sources here for you to think about. Now the idea is for you to try to put these together into an imaginary story.

Drawing on the readings write an imaginary biography of a Roman slave in about 200 words or more. Cite at least three sources in your text (just put the number of the primary source in parentheses at the end of the sentence it inspired). You can also cite (Strauss, p. x), if you use Strauss (which I recommend).

You could write the story of an imagined gladiator, or rebel like Spartacus who was in fact a gladiator (see the BBC site on gladiators), but don’t rewrite the life of Spartacus. You could chose a female perspective as well. Read the sources carefully for your thoughts on how life for a slave might have changed during their life. What kinds of conditions did they live under (of course there was variety but follow what the sources suggest)? What challenges did they face? What decisions or choices might slaves make? What forms of resistance could they offer (including but not only rebellion).

Give it a try! Write the imaginary biography of a Roman slave.

Please let me know if you have any questions. And don’t forget the graffiti if you want to draw a picture of your slave!

This week, you will submit the annotation of a qualitative research article on a topic of your interest. Narrative, ethnographic, grounded theory, case study, and phenomenology are examples of types of research designs or approaches used in qualitative research.

Submit: Annotation of a Qualitative Research Article

This week, you will submit the annotation of a qualitative research article on a topic of your interest. Narrative, ethnographic, grounded theory, case study, and phenomenology are examples of types of research designs or approaches used in qualitative research.

An annotation consists of three separate paragraphs that cover three respective components: summary, analysis, and application. These three components convey the relevance and value of the source. As such, an annotation demonstrates your critical thinking about, and authority on, the source topic. This week’s annotation is a precursor to the annotated bibliography assignment due in Week 10.

An annotated bibliography is a document containing selected sources accompanied by a respective annotation of each source. In preparation for your own future research, an annotated bibliography provides a background for understanding a portion of the existing literature on a particular topic. It is also a useful first step in gathering sources in preparation for writing a subsequent literature review as part of a dissertation.

Please review the assignment instructions below and click on the underlined words for information about how to craft each component of an annotation.

It is recommended that you use the grading rubric as a self-evaluation tool before submitting your assignment.

  1. Use the Walden library database to search for a qualitative research article from a peer-reviewed journal on a topic of your interest.
  2. Before you read the full article and begin your annotation, locate the methodology section in the article to be sure that the article describes a qualitative study. Confirm that one of the types of qualitative research designs or approaches, such as narrative, ethnographic, grounded theory, case study, or phenomenology, was used in the study.
  3. Annotate one qualitative research article from a peer-reviewed journal on a topic of your interest.
  4. Provide the reference list entry for this article in APA Style followed by a three-paragraph annotation that includes:
    • summary
    • An analysis
    • An application as illustrated in this example
    • Format your annotation in Times New Roman, 12-point font, double-spaced. A separate References list page is not needed for this assignment.

How could an increased awareness of information processing, your learning style, and your attention and self-regulation strategies potentially affect your performance in your academic journey? Your career development/professional life?

Prior to engaging in this discussion, please read “Chapter 8: Owning Our Learning Experiences” in your e-book and review the Instructor Guidance. Metacognition is the ability to be aware of and regulate one’s thought processes. It is suggested to be a process that improves our ability to effectively process information. Consider the benefits of being more aware of your own learning needs and how it might affect both your personal and professional goals. Discuss the following:

  • How could an increased awareness of information processing, your learning style, and your attention and self-regulation strategies potentially affect your performance in your academic journey?
  • Your career development/professional life?
  • Based on your career goals, how can a better understanding of how we learn be applied?
(e.g. in your organization? your community? your volunteer efforts?)
  • Did you learn anything important about yourself through the process of learning about learning?
  • What did you learn about your peers in the class through the process of learning about learning?
  • How will you apply what you have learned about yourself in your future learning activities (whether you are the learner or the instructor in these activities)?
  • Do you agree or disagree that by applying the elements of metacognition into your studies, you will improve your ability to learn more effectively?

if may help..

my description on my political cartoon:I chose this political cartoon because it reflects the trends of today’s democracy. We all know that democracy is defined as a form of government in which the people are the first and the highest authority. However, not everyone’s voice and opinion can be heard and considered. In addition, digital media become the main concern in people’s daily life. We can get informations and latest issues easily by turning on televisions and social medias. Also, media has become the main source of information transmission and value creation.  Through media,  we can be well informed about our community, countries and the world. But some media reports are not comprehensive, and they like to select news reports based on trends to achieve the highest attention rate. For example, negative news is always easier to catch people’s attention. Therefore, the media will filter the information to expose only a part of the information. Just like this political cartoon, there is obviously a large group of people representing positive information, but those journalists and the media only focus on negative information. So only negative information will be presented. This creates the wrong value and is misleading. Not only that,  in the first paragraph of Foa and Stryuk reading has also reflected such wrong situation.

“For four decades, Die Welt, one of West Germany’s leading newspapers, refused to acknowledge the existence of an East German state. Since the paper’s editors expected the communist regime to collapse within a matter of years, they put scare quotes around its initials when- ever they discussed the German Democratic Republic (GDR). While other papers reported about the policies pursued by the GDR, Die Welt unfailingly wrote about the “GDR.”” (Foa and Stryuk, page 5).  This passage proves that the newspaper as a source of information transmission refused to acknowledge some informations. However, this behavior is wrong, and the information should be presented to the public fairly.

Great job this semester.

Section 1: Definitions

· Please define or identify the following terms. Each is worth 2 points. (20 points)

1. Tropical Cyclone:

2. Minerals & Rocks: Any solid, naturally occurring inorganic material in the Earth that has a characteristic crystal structure and well-defined chemical composition. Most rocks are mixtures of more than one mineral. Rock is any solid material made up of one or more minerals and occurring naturally on the Earth or other planetary bodies.

3. Primary waves & Secondary waves: Primary waves also known as P-waves or compressional waves, P-waves produce alternate stretching and compression in the material they pass through. P-waves can travel through both solid and liquid portions of the Earth’s interior. Secondary waves also known as S-waves or shear waves, S-waves shake rocky material from side to side or up and down as they pass. Unlike P-waves, they cannot pass through liquids, S-waves only though solid parts.

4. Richter Scale:

5. Ice Age:

6. Triple Point (as defined for H2O):

7. Nimbus Clouds:

8. Rock Cycle:

9. What is the center of our solar system?

10. What is the speed of light?

Section 2: Answer the following questions. (4 points each 40points)

a) What evidence (or event) was observed within 2018 that supports the continental drift theory? (You need to support you answer)

b) What is the density equation and how can it be determined for rock and mineral samples?

c) What does weather originate from?

d) Why does quartz come in more then one color? And how can all be considered quartz?

Section 3: “Longest Short answer” (15 Points each 30 points)

1. The global climate is changing. Many of the changes being experienced are believed to be caused by our use and the development of materials. How are the aspects of our lives (yours) related to these changes and what could be done the in the future help make changes (or slow changes) in our global environment. In your discussion I am looking for you to relate and comment on topics including, global warming, technology, green solutions and weather. It is important for you to draw at least 2 connections in your response to show your understanding of the global nature of the issue.

2. Find a current scientific article (that relates to topics cover this term) and review it for me. Just as you have in the discussion portion of the class all semester. You review should be one paragraph and include a reference. (this should be a current article not one from “weeks” ago and not one you previously reviewed)

Section 4: Projects (10 Points)

1. In your work on your term project what was the most surprising thing you learned? Discuss this and share how it will make you think about global challenges more scientifically?
