(a) Subsequent paragraphs should contain a discussion about the selected literature sources, organized into those in ethical positions, unethical positions, and positions offering completely different arguments

It is not required that you do an objection and reply. The reason for this is that I want you to focus on the task of identifying connections and fleshing them out so that they are clear and significant. (It’s possible that you’ll find that an objection-reply strategy will in fact help you do this, but again, it is not required.)

WRITING ASSIGNMENT #4: The “How America’s Food Giants Swallowed the Family Farms” article and how it connects with other of our themes

Insert in the drop box for Writing Assignment #4 on D2L.

As noted on the syllabus: 300-400 words

Instructions:

The story in “How America’s Food Giants Swallowed the Family Farms” has connections to various of our readings, which is not surprising in that various of the claims, thesis, ideas that we are exploring in this course have interconnections.  Sometimes these are causal connections, and sometime they are conceptual connections; in any case, it is useful to think about them together.

Write an essay in which you explain how the story laid out in the Guardian article

can be analyzed in terms of, or otherwise connected to, at least two of the following:

(1) the analysis given by Holt-Gimenez and Patel in Food Rebellions

(2) the analysis of “sustainability” discussed by Paul Thompson

(3) the ideas of “locality” discussed in Thompson and DeLind

(4) ideas about food sovereignty as discussed in the Wittman, et al. article

Note that you get to choose the theme or theses to be discussed here, but you should be sure to choose these in a way that shows an understanding of what’s important about all this.

You get to choose which other themes [(1)-(4)] to make use of in your analysis (and hence what other readings to make use of), but don’t assume that it will work out equally well with any two of them. Give some thought first to which ones you think provide interesting insight or really connect to what you want to say.

It is not required that you do an objection and reply. The reason for this is that I want you to focus on the task of identifying connections and fleshing them out so that they are clear and significant. (It’s possible that you’ll find that an objection-reply strategy will in fact help you do this, but again, it is not required.)

As before: Citations are required; quotations are not. Quotations, if you have them, should not be long, and they don’t count toward the word count. (See general description of the writing assignments on the syllabus.) I wouldn’t expect you to use any sources outside of the class readings. Of course you do have to cite the Guardian article and the readings you use to follow the above instructions. The style for doing the citations? You can just cite the page number in the following way: (Thompson, p. X).

Discuss the changes of the Intelligence Community since 9.11.  What role do Fusion Centers play?  Is there redundancy within the IC which can be mitigated?

Please answer the following research question:

Adaptive Sports Global (ASG) Corporation*

This brand new ASG startup company has just hired you on as one of three new

marketing product line managers reporting to the marketing director. Several years in

the planning, the start-up is now becoming operational. The founders are engineers and

managers who are sports enthusiasts that wanted better clothing and gear to pursue

their sports passions. Besides hiring based on specific qualifications for the particular

job, they only hire athletes and weekend sports enthusiasts who use various types of

sporting gear and clothing in their personal lives and can therefore relate to the user.

They allow the first two weeks at the company for intensive training and using the gear

to become thoroughly familiar with the product. Whatever feedback they get from users

they funnel into the production and design to make improvements. All production is

done within the United States (U.S.) The founders want to keep the company relatively

small in staff but with a global market. The headquarters is located outside of Pittsburg

PA. The headquarters building as well as their production facilities (which predominantly

uses robots for actual production work) and large warehouse are Green Seal® and

LEED certified®*(Green Seal; BuidingGreen, 2019). The company is committed to

planting the amount of trees each year to offset their carbon emissions generated from

production. The majority of products are currently sold directly to customers through the company website.

The mission of the company is: We make quality clothes and equipment that we sell to

active people anywhere, that adapt to the terrain and climate in a sustainable manner.

The objectives, according to the executives of ASG, are:

 Create sustainable clothes that adapt to temperature variations and weather

conditions in a sustainable manner.

 Design and produce sports equipment that will adapt to (1) differing terrains and

climates as well as (2) adapt to different sports and (3) provide excellent

performance.

The department has hired you as one of three new marketing product line managers

(you can read the general product manager job duties).

Product line 1. Sports Equipment: Winter sports (skiing, snowboarding, winter

climbing, skating, ice hockey, etc.) and shoes or boots that apply.

Product line 2. Sports Equipment: All other sports: Sailing (and parasailing), surfing,

tennis, golf, rock climbing (and indoor gym/parcourse, etc.) and footwear that fit those

sports.

Product line 3. Apparel: All sports clothing lines, starting with hats, helmets, vests, and

jackets (male and female lines).

All equipment and apparel is either compostable, or can be recycled. All equipment comes with

a free return label when the person has finished with the equipment so that it may be recycled.

corporate structure: 46 employees to date

ASG

For instance, wooden surf boards that are cracked from impact on rocks etc. can be sent back

to ASG. The company then recycles the components to make new surfboards or repairs them

and donates them to third world areas or poorer countries where sports equipment might be

considered unattainable economically.

  2. Description of the standard administrative steps and processes in a typical health care organization’s risk management program compared to the administrative steps and processes you identify in your selected example plan. (Note: For standard risk management policies and procedures, look up the MIPPA-approved accrediting body that regulates the risk management standards in your chosen health care sector, and consider federal, state, and local statutes as well.)
  3. Analysis of the key agencies and organizations that regulate the administration of safe health care in your area of concentration and an evaluation of the roles each one plays in the risk management oversight process.
  4. Evaluation of your selected risk management plan’s compliance with the standards of its corresponding MIPPA-approved accrediting body relevant to privacy, health care worker safety, and patient safety.
  5. Proposed recommendations or changes you would implement in your risk management program example to enhance, improve, or secure the aforementioned compliance standards.

Chapter 8 – The Judicial System in Texas

1. Judges in Texas are elected and must therefore run for re-election. Federal judges are appointed by the President of the United States (with the approval of the United States Senate) and then they serve for life or until they retire. They are not elected and therefore do not have to ever run for election. Which system do you think is better (judges elected OR judges appointed) and fully explain why.

ANSWER:

Chapter 9 – Political Socialization, Political Behavior, and Public Opinion

2. Politicians study political socialization and the political behavior of their constituents to direct their campaigns. Politicians may focus on different issues and messages during their campaigns depending on the audience they are speaking to at any given time. For example, if a politician is speaking to a group of business people then the politician would know that and direct their messages to the interests of those people in that certain business industry. If the politician is speaking to a group of farmers, the politician is going to direct their messages to the interests and needs of farmers. Before politicians speak to any group they will study and understand the characteristics of that group so they can direct their messages to that group’s interests. If you were a politician about to go and speak to a group of people, tell me the at least three (3) things you would want to know about that group of people that would help you direct your message. Fully explain why you want to know about these characteristics and how they would help you.

CO5121 LAW OF BUSINESS ORGANISATIONS SP53 2019

ASSIGNMENT

Due date: A written assignment is due by 15 January 2020 23:59.

Weighting: The assignment is worth 30% of the marks for the subject.

Individual Assignment: This is an individual assignment – students are not to copy each other’s work. Rather, their essay is to be a reflection of their original thoughts, analysis and research.

Lodgement: you must lodge assignments in hard copy to your lecturer during class on the due date with an assignment cover sheet that has been time and date recorded. You must ALSO lodge your assignment electronically via the LearnJCU website as a backup copy (and to check for plagiarism). Please ensure you retain a photocopy of the assignment. Your electronic copy of the assignment must also be submitted before the due time on the due day. Note the link on the web site to the University’s policy on submitting assignments electronically.

To submit your electronic copy of the assignment, follow these instructions:

1. Go to your subject site in Learn JCU, select Assignments from the left-hand navigation bar.

2. You will see an icon that looks like a blue page – Click on View/Complete.

3. To attach your file, click on the ‘Browse’ button and double click on the file you wish to submit. You can also write a

comment about the file you are sending eg if you have an extension, you might want to say “Extension Granted” Please note that you are only able to submit the assignment in one document.

For more information go to http://learnjcu.jcu.edu.au and click on LearnJCU Toolbox under the Support tab.

Penalty for late submission: the penalty for late submission of assignments without an extension having been granted is the loss of 5% of the total marks available (for the piece of assessment) per day vanishing down to a mark of zero after 20 days.

In fairness to all students, extensions of time will only be granted in exceptional circumstances and where there is cogent evidence supporting the need for extension. If an extension is applied for close to the due date, normally the

2

assumption of the lecturer will be that the student has had up to five weeks to work on the task and has done so consistently. The co-ordinator may require the student to produce their work completed to the time of the request for an extension.

If your circumstances warrant the need for an extension, or you would like to request an informal review of your assessment, please refer to the Subject Outline for further details. The “Review of Assessment” and “Request for Extension” forms are available in hard copy from the Law School office or from the Law School web site: http://www.jcu.edu.au/law Please note that all enquiries and concerns relating to assessment review and teaching and learning issues should, in the first instance, be addressed to the Lecturer/Subject Coordinator. The Head of School will not enter into discussion without evidence that the Lecturer/Subject Coordinator has been formally consulted.

Word Limit: Assignment – 1500-2000 words. Note that your emphasis should not be on length but rather on clarity and precision of thought and expression. You must indicate the length of the assignment on your paper. Word count not recorded – Students will be penalized 2 marks for failing to record the correct word count on the cover sheet or assignment. Word count exceeded – Students will be penalized 1 mark for each 100 words (or part thereof after the first 100 words) above the 1,500-2000 word limit.

Style Guide: include footnotes or endnotes and a bibliography. These are not included in calculating the paper’s word length (unless the footnote is used for extremely long passages of text that may run the risk of circumventing the word limit). Referencing for all Law assignments must be based on the following – Australian Guide to Legal Citation (latest edition) University of Melbourne. (http://www.mulr.law.unimelb.edu.au/go/AGLC3)

Marking Schedule: a marking sheet is attached. Marks will be primarily awarded for content, analysis and reasoning (based on sound research) but expression, grammar and spelling, presentation and form will also be taken into account (especially where such detracts from the strength of the argument/analysis). Regard shall be had to the following criteria: 1. Demonstrated familiarity with the relevant law and policies (based on sound research); 2. Evaluation of arguments/critical analysis of the relevant law and policies (based on sound research); 3. Development of argument (based on sound research); 4. Structure and organisation; 5. Originality; 6. Quality of expression, spelling, grammar, and punctuation; and 7. Referencing and bibliography.

Structure: While there is always a place for creativity in answering the questions set, somewhere towards the early part of the answer, there should be an outline/summary/statement of your argument/answer to the question in a nutshell. (Where a question includes a quotation to be analysed, ensure that you address the nub of the quotation in all aspects of the assignment). The assignment should also typically include: brief statement of the law/development or change

3

proposal/development; analysis (eg what was/is the change meant to achieve and why; has it achieved/is it likely to achieve that goal; is it too early to tell; what does the case law and scholarly analysis tell us?) The conclusion ought to consist of a summary showing how your analysis supports your opinions/deductions. It is significant to note that good research supports good analysis. Headings may also be useful. For the problem section of the question, the IRAC (issue, rule, apply, conclude) technique may be useful.

Research Skills: Please refer to Milne, S & Tucker, K, A Practical Guide to Legal Research, latest edition, Law Book Company. You will note from the schedule for the course, that the lecturer takes students through research databases and methodologies that are relevant to the assignment, also. It is important to attend that class – as it is important to attend most classes.

Policy on Plagiarism: Please note the link on the web site to the University’s policy on plagiarism. This WILL be enforced. Recent case law has confirmed that evidence of plagiarism at University will be considered by a court upon an application for admission. Failure to disclose such evidence is viewed very seriously.

Question:

“In 2019, the Final Report of the Banking Royal Commission was released. Critically analyse the main findings of that report as relevant to corporations law. Has the Australian Government accepted those recommendations? If so which ones? What is the timeline for implementation?

Considering the position in Singapore and the UK, have these jurisdictions had similar Enquiries? If so, have there been recommendations and law reforms flowing from those Enquiries relevant to the corporate law of those countries? If so, how do they compare to the developments in Australia? If there has not been an Enquiry in the UK or Singapore, why not? (30 marks)

You will need to undertake legal research and analysis in order to provide support for all of your answers above and this includes references to the relevant law where applicable.
